More fun with hearts! While I was painting this one, a song was running through my head from an old movie I watched years ago...the movie was Me And My Gal and I found a version of it on youtube. Listen and see if you remember it. It is amazing how a song from a musical from 1915 can still roll around in my head. I watched it at a very young age much later when it was made into a movie of course! :-)

I imagine this horse patiently waiting at a cantina on the beach in Mexico while his owner is cooling off inside and visiting with the other locals, and a few tourists who stopped to give this sweet mare a pat on the back...or did you imagine something else? I'd love to hear. I am having fun painting my animal subjects on the beach since my move to the oceanfront area of Virginia Beach. I am really having fun with my commitment to posting a painting daily. It is helping me to stretch myself and to explore different subjects! If you are a numbers kind of person and are very observant...both of which I am not, you may have seen that some days I have not remembered to number my painting and when I

have gone back to fix them...I double numbered one painting SO when I finish this post I am going to attempt to fix the error of my ways. I have a feeling this may be an ongoing struggle. Bailee and I went for a walk along the oceanfront the other day up to the end where there are many dunes. This time of year the shadows are long and beautiful. I did a quick study today and plan to do a larger piece. If you see any of my paintings and want something done in a larger size, please let me know!

I decided to have some fun with hearts today. I started with a textured canvas and just followed my "heart". Intuitive painting is very freeing. I did several and really got into it! Many people feel that the heart is like an extension of our brains holding memories and feelings. Some people who have had heart transplants suddenly have urges for different foods and are drawn to new things and find that the donor loved those things. So hearts really symbolize so much more than just the pump that gets the blood moving in our bodies. They are at the center of our being and sharing our hearts with others is very special!

Today's when I was walking with Bailee, I was thoroughly enjoying the time out in the fresh air, said hello to some ladies passing by, and the next thing I knew, I was landing on the concrete on all fours. Ouch. I haven't been this banged up since falling off my bike as a child. My inner ear gets a little funny this time of year so I will blame it on that. Well...that was my day! One good thing is that Bailee stayed with me. Hope your day was a good one. Tomorrow I go paint with my friend, Barbara Lively again and we are going to paint seahorses! Thank you for stopping by!

What a beautiful day it was today. Bailee and I walked along oceanfront avenue and there was a line of sailboats on the horizon which inspired me to paint a sailboat. I went sailing several times when I was in my twenties and have to admit that I enjoy watching sailboats from the distance more than being in one.

I just get motion sickness very easily but they sure are beautiful out on the sea and I am so lucky to be able to see them often now.

This weekend I will be part of two local shows. One is Nansemond Suffolk which will be up for a week and you can go to the opening day on Saturday from 10 until 4. The art work is from artists all around the region and there are some wonderful pieces! I am also in the Norfok Collegiate Show which runs from Friday evening for a week also. If you live locally, I hope you will stop out and see the shows!

I will be replacing this picture tomorrow during daylight and it will be less shiny! Thanks for stopping by!

More fun visiting the warm beach in my imagination although it is going to get up to 65 here tomorrow! It was really windy today and the ocean was very choppy...Bailee and I walked up and looked and decided that that was enough! I am still framing like crazy getting ready to drop off more work for the two upcoming shows this weekend. What fun I had to day with my friend Barbara painting with the classical music turned up and our cups of hot chocolate at our side! Painting with someone else sometimes is just the think that you need to share ideas and inspiration. Great fun! My studio mate, Miss Bailee, other wise known as "the demon child"

misses me though and was very happy when I returned home and took out walk up to the ocean to see what was happening. We saw a lab at play and the sea gulls enjoying the sunlight...not too different from this painting! How lucky I am to be enjoying coastal living! I also did a moonlit scene that I will share tomorrow. I will be busy framing tonight as I am showing work in two local shows in the next weeks, one is Nansemond Suffolk Academy and the other is Norfolk Collegiate. I love how puffed up this little guy looks. He is feeling one with nature and all its glory! The picture is a bit too shiny but I will replace it in the morning. I have to get a head so I can get some of these photographed in the day and posted in the day! Wish me luck with that! I have a busy next couple of weeks with two school shows at Nansemond Suffolk Academy and Norfolk Collegiate. I will be putting several framed pieces in both shows. I will also get to see some friends who I haven't seen in a long time which will be great! Spend the day today looking at ordering lots of panels and contemplating moving to a simpler palette of paints to cut down on overwhelm! Any artists reading have a favorite paint brand to recommend and online place to get panels? I am checking around as Jerry's never seems to have the 6 by 6 in stock. There's nothing more beautiful than seeing wild horses at the beach! Or being fortunate enough to ride a horse along the ocean's edge. Here in Virginia we have the wild horses in Chincoteague that I have

This gal is very special to me as she is the cow that inspired me to begin painting cows and more especially cow portraits. While at a workshop in Valentia, Ireland, I spent an evening around a bonfire with friends with this beauty in the field only a few yards away. She was so curious and kept her eye on us all evening. When on of our friends suggested we go paint at 11 o'clock at night as the sun was just beginning to set on Valentia....she was still on my mind. Since then I have painted countless cows but like to go back to her occasionally and relive that evening. I loved all the colors dancing on her as the sun began to set. Each time I paint her she looks a bit different. I like the softness of the edges in this one and the suggestion of the gorgeous field that surrounded her. Hope your weekend has been great. I took a rather brisk walk with Bailee today. We walked on the beach for about a block and that was enough for me! Hurry up Spring! Actually I don't to wish any time away...these days inside are good for painting and watching some great movies. Netflix has been my company this weekend. Thanks for checking in!

This piece was another inspired by a photo I found on the site I was telling you about where
photographers and artists contribute photos for artists to use and I loved the light and of course,
the subject! Years ago when visiting my mother's family in Ireland, my Uncle Tommy took me
out into a field of cows with his transistor radio and all the cows in the field came over to him from
every direction to hear the music! He said that the farmer's play music to relax the cows and that
they give more milk. It was a heavenly experience for this city girl to be surrounded by cows! Hope
your Thursday has been a good one. I really spend a lot of time on this one today but it kept me out

More fun with items from my kitchen. I did this one yesterday because I knew I would not be up to painting today. I finally took care of some long overdue dental problems and my mouth not too happy

tonight. Three crowns and a filling! Yikes. It does feel good to have it done except for getting the Permanent ones put in. So back to my easel tomorrow after my painting session in the morning with my good friends Scott and Barbara. It is always so much fun to paint with other artists. Hope you had a

I am on a roll with food! These little clementines are such a great snack...so easy to peel

and so tasty! I think they make a nice painting too! I had coated this canvas a few days ago with a bright cerulean blue and when it came time to paint this, it made the perfect backdrop with little bits of it peeking through. It is a wonderful exercise to paint still life subjects set up in the studio and it challenges you in a

Wow...it is not even three o'clock and I am posting to my blog. I am feeling very proud of myself

and it is a good think because I have not done laundry in over a week! My paperwork is piling up too so I will get busy. Hope your weekend was a good one. It was gorgeous weather here and today is is rainy and cool. Perfect weather for a Monday. I wasn't sure of what my subject would be after yesterday's challenging piece of the mare and her foal on the beach so when I got my morning coffee, I saw these two garlics on top of the microwave and knew I had my subject. Can't explain how the decision process works as I have looked at those garlic for quite some time now and talked myself right out of it. Kind of looks like I should embark on some culinary magic with these....perhaps I can talk my son into it! :-)

Well, I had better get busy as there are more paintings to do and I have nothing left to wear!

Well, what a week it has been. I have given my brushes a workout this week and

a couple of palette knives too! It has been fun working on this challenge and I am

ending up with week going out for the evening to make sure I don't make myself crazy in the process.

Crazier...that is. I am so excited to have gotten a new ceiling fan installed in my studio with four lights

Busy day getting back into the studio and doing some reflecting on what I would like to have as my goals for the new year. I have been a daily painter now for five years! In the beginning I would paint every day of the year including the holidays and probably did that for two years. Some days I completed more than one and some days just worked on several at a time but did not finish any. I am going to set a big goal for myself this year and that is to post a painting every single day! Yikes. That is 365 paintings for the year!! I think one of the reasons many of us slowed up in our painting production is that with our slowed economy, where were we going to put all the paintings that might accumulate. For that reason, some paintings may be painted on paper or even on a found object! I just want to ratchet up the creativity and accountability a bit and make the journey a bit more challenging! Let me know what you think of this and please, please, please, if you have any suggestions or ideas or old photographs you'd like to share, let me know! I'd love to do more people, like people from the beach from years gone by or people and their animals in action such as on horseback or walking their dogs, etc. You get the idea. Makes me a wee bit scared to think about doing this again but I think that is what I need....action! Hope you New Year is off to a great start! Nite nite!

My Favorites from 2011

I got the idea from artist, Leslie Saeta, to do a collage of my favorites from 2011. It is fun to look back over the course of a year and get a perspective on things. This is very subjective, so these are my personal favorites and not because they all sold....some are still available but just because! The ones still available are the top left corner, the second up from the bottom left, the second one in on the top, the next one over, and the bottom right. Another easy way to see what is available by doing to my available works! Do you have a favorite?

Just did the monthly free painting giveaway and the winner is Claudia Finn! I use random.org and she is the last winner of 2011, I will post more about Claudia and the painting she won tomorrow. Just wanted to make sure I did it in December!

I hope you have a wonderful New Year's Eve! Some of my favorites were spent when the children were little and they banged on pots and pans at midnight or just spending it watching the ball drop with loved ones. Tonight I am going to a party at a friend's house and we are to wear masks or hats. This should be fun! This morning I am at Starbucks. Just love working on my computer here. I wasn't planning on it but as I was setting up my coffee maker this morning, I heard a loud explosion. We do live in a military area so I was not too alarmed but then realized that I didn't have any electricity. Any excuse is better than none so I headed down here and my neighbor texted me an said they already came out and fixed it. It was something up in the pole across the street.

I worked on this bird as a demonstration for a lovely lady who wanted some tips on color. She does beautiful murals and interior design! I was amazed at how much she does as well as raising young children. Even makes her own wallpaper! Anyway, it was a delight to meet her and be inspired by her creativity! I love these red tanagers and and enjoyed working with acrylics again. Just sold the acrylic cow at the beach! Have a wonderful day as you get ready to ring in the New Year! Finally!! I can share my commissions that I was working on before
Christmas. This is Molly 95 percent finished. I forgot to take a final picture of her! :-( I think I will be getting one from her owner soon. I actually did two of
this sweet little girl so I will share that tomorrow. She looks like she is being really good in anticipation of a treat!
How were your holidays? I had a wonderful time having all three of my boys at home and my grand puppies too. We went to the beach on Christmas Day and it was beautiful! The labs went swimming as usual and brought a red football in together over and over and had a great time. We also went to see Mission Impossible which was really good! I am excited to get back to painting this week and have a new student starting on Thursday. This month, I will be in three local shows so I will be covered in paint as I get ready for them! Are you still hanging in there! Or have the holidays put you over the edge? I was approaching the edge and then my sons got home...one from Virginia Tech and his older brother who brought him home. They descended upon the house last night and with laundry, my grand puppy, Brewsky, gifts to be wrapped and suddenly life is too fun to be caught up in the craziness....that was mostly in my head! Spending time together IS the best part of Christmas and chocolate covered cherries. Well...I found them at the grocery store yesterday. I think they are from Germany and ooo la la. Tis the season to be jolly!

This cow is very jolly. She is quite the babe and is looking for a new home! She is dry and can be in your home by Christmas! Hope the rest of your weekend is wonderful!

I am so excited to have my sons coming tomorrow. One will be home on break from Virginia Tech and the other down from Reston where he lives and works. Today I will be cleaning and shopping for groceries and presents...no I am not ready for Christmas and generally fluffing the nest.

I had some fun with this painting trying out a mono print. I have done this before when I need to stop for the day and I have quite a bit of paint on the panel. I take a piece of paper and lay it on the painting and then it will be ready to continue the next day without too much build up of paint. It creates a mirror image and I really like the look. On this one, I embellished it a bit with more oil but wished I had just left it the way it was. Next time, I will try it on watercolor paper or even another panel. Have you ever tried this? What kind of surface do you lay over your painting? I know one artist that painted on glass and then did several prints from it.

Isn't it cool? One leg looks kind of funky...that is where I embellished it. I bet canvas paper would be a good option too. I will keep you posted as I try more of these and will probably have them for sale with a mat. Don't forget the calendars! Only a few left. And gift certificates! If you have someone who loves animals or cows and you don't know which one to get, you can give a gift certificate and they can use it when they see one they love or have me paint their pet or favorite subject. I must have taken 50 pictures of this gull to use as references for this painting as he traveled up

and down the water's edge. It was a beautiful day in November and he put on quite a show. I used my older camera with the good zoom and of all the shots I took....I chose this close up of his face. I love faces! I thought he was rather a handsome and regal fella!

I have had a wonderful painting day today that started at nine and I am still at it. Bailee and I had a good walk at dinner and she is letting me know it is time to go out again. This robin appears to be taking a bow in the light. He knows he is putting on quite a show as only nature can! I was driving home the other night in my new neighborhood and found a section off Holly Road where the neighbors put on quite a seasonal display and it was such a treat. Tonight's post is one that I have shared before and she is one of my favorites. She kind of fell off the brush out of my memory and time spent painting cow portraits and had such a sweet and dreamy quality about her. She seems like she is enjoying her time in the late afternoon pasture and glances at us with a curious gaze.

I had fully intended to paint today but it was truly a "Monday" that gives Monday's a bad name with each task coming up against some obstacle and a killer headache to boot. When I look back, I did ship paintings, calendars, did computer work, took Bailee for walks, laundry and all that good stuff but it felt like I was on a hamster wheel all day! As I write, I realize that I think that my expectations are the problem. I want to accomplish incredible feats all day every day! Some day's feel like that and some days feel like today. I will be glad to lay my head down tonight! Such if life. And it is the season to be jolly! Hope your day was a good one. Thank you for stopping by to visit! Awesome day today in my studio. It was raining and dark at the beach so it was the perfect day to get some tea and head to my favorite place full of the smell of oil paint and beautiful colors. I did quite a bit of work on my new mac computer...I do love it! And planning shows and new ideas for paintings.

But then I decided to do today's cow in a more expressionistic style and it was fun. I love the looseness and freedom and know that I will be doing more paintings like this!

Hope your Wednesday is awesome! I will be in the studio again!! I want to try some florals and a red bird tomorrow! I am in the mood for red! I have my tree up already and it is the first time ever that I have it up this early. I grew up in a home where we put our tree up on Christmas Eve so I had to be brought SLOWLY in this direction. I loved our tradition but you can't fight city hall and so now mine is up and ready for the holidays...no presents yet but the house looks good!

As I sit here writing, the food fairy who is really more of a devil is sitting on my shoulder whispering...get another piece of pecan pie, and another piece of strawberry pie too! She really is relentless. What a great feast we had yesterday and such fun spending time with family and friends. I even got my son to bring in the Christmas tree which I hope to have trimmed this weekend which will be a first for me to get it doe this early but I am inspired by my new surroundings at the beach and want to deck the halls of my new beach cottage! The dogs sure had fun running on the beach yesterday and Bailee who wouldn't even go within

fifty feet of the ocean, showed off to her buddy, Jet how brave she is and even got her feet wet! They were chasing my oldest son, Patrick all over the place as well as a few other people on the beach!

A Few Of My Favorite Things!

WOW! I have so much to share! I had another wonderful session, with artist, Leslie Saeta last week who shares so much of he knowledge of marketing our art and has an

incredible infectious enthusiasm. Since that time, I have been feeling like I can leap

tall buildings in a single bound and have been selling paintings and having a great time

of it in my studio. We talked about my work and what I like to paint and decided that I like

to paint my favorite things! This collage is filled with my favorite things...animals, birds,

the seaside, pets and food! I need to do a painting of chocolate and cookies next! If

you paint what you love and love to paint...it doesn't get much better!

Next things I wanted to share is that I got a MAC! I know that there is a big divide between

PC lovers and Mac lovers that almost rivals political points of view but if you are visual

inclined...it is heaven! I also love that I can take unlimited classes because there are so many things about computers in general that I don't know so I can finally have a place to go to get smarter about what I can do with them! My son is a big gamer and is loving his new PC and it certainly has some fun features. He uses his fingerprint to access sites! So they are all good!

Friday night was the opening at London Square Gallery and it was great! If you have never been to a show there, I highly recommend it. This current show will be up until the holidays! I sold a painting of one of my shore birds and here is my new collector standing by it!

More fun with acrylics and crayons! I worked this fellow over the course of two days. The first session ended up in frustration which led to finger painting. Looking at it now, it is hard to tell how wild it looked for awhile.

It sat and dried and when I picked up the brushes today the fun began. I named him Gully cause it seems like the right name. I finished my commission today which is a 16 by 20 cow for over the mantel! I am very excited to be included into the show at London Square Gallery this coming Friday night from 6 to 9. I have several pieces in the show. I hope you will come out and see them if you live nearby!

Yesterday I took a walk along the beach and took a couple of hundred photos of dogs enjoying the surf and sea gulls and sandpipers. The light was great at the end of the day and I felt like a fashion photographer
catching all the possible angles of the gulls who were prancing around and seemed to be enjoying the attention! Can't wait to try out some new possibilities. Might even try some oil pastels on my next oil. Have an awesome Wednesday! Thanks for stopping by to check in on me.

I found this quote today on the calendar at yoga class and loved it. Thought you might too!

I had such fun today playing with acrylics and crayons!! I was inspired by a fellow daily painter, Robert Joyner who works in acrylic and mixed media such as crayon and sharpies. I decided to give it a try on some mat board I had in the studio and some crayons....a brand new box that has been sitting around for years. I tried to work much more abstractly like he does and went down to have my dinner pretty disappointed. I had forgotten how different acrylic looks when it has dried and when I came back I continued to work on it using the loose brush work and lost edges to my advantage and made it my own. It is so exciting to try something new and feel like a kid again! I will be back in my studio tomorrow finishing up a commission and playing with crayons again! Have a terrific weekend!

Since my move to the oceanfront of Virginia Beach, I have been seeing a lot of sea gulls every day when I walk my dog, Bailee. They seem to be taking it all in stride and just spending time by the sea for these walks is helping ME to take it all in stride. It is so peaceful and soothing and if I go there with any heavy thoughts or worries, they seem to wash away in short order! I enjoyed spending time with this fella today!

I just had to do a study of this dog when I saw her. She certainly has those ears standing at attention! What a cutie. I so enjoy painting animals of any kind and love their innocent spirits. Since our move last month and the passing of our fifteen year old kitty, Bailee and I have been bonding even more and she has been getting quite spoiled. She wants to know where I am at all times and looks forward to our walks. I can't imagine life without pets! I must admit that I love to have sappy old movies on in my studio when I am painting. Many of my artist friends are surprised to hear that as they like to have music or quiet when they paint. I had just seen a very dramatic scene where the female lead was having to say goodbye to her love who was leaving during the war and they both turned around to have one last look. Then this cow was the next painting I worked on! Do you think I transferred any of that romantic longing? Is there a dashing bull in the field? It was a fun afternoon in the studio! My bovine gal and I watched chick flicks....well more like listened to really. I just like the company and older movies are like comfort food to me as I remember watching them with my Dad on Saturday mornings growing up. What is your favorite old movie? My all time favorite is An Affair to Remember but I also loved Alfred Hitchcock thrillers like Rear Window and North by Northwest. I'd love to have some suggestions. I have Netflix on my computer. I loved this quote...it really struck a chord. Before I decided to paint a sparrow I thought about all the sparrows I used to watch as a child growing up in Philadelphia. We didn't have many trees in my neighborhood...lots of row houses and concrete but we did have many electrical wires that the birds loved to sit on and there were some that stretched outside of my window. They are sweet little birds that blend into the environment and don't wow us with color but have lovely markings and catch the light on their pretty white breasts. I enjoyed a peaceful afternoon today working on this little guy.

I spoke to my sister yesterday who lives in Massachusetts and she said they were predicting snow! That really always amazes me every year when it is still in the 70's during the late day here. The nights are starting to get a bit chilly but Bailee and I are still enjoying our walks and often see surfers in the ocean...with their shortie wet suits and some brave souls without them. When I lived at Chesapeake...which is only thirty minutes drive west of the oceanfront, I just didn't think about all this activity by the water. It is pretty neat to see how much people are drawn to the vast ocean whether to stroll along with their dogs, or read quietly by the surf, or feel the call of the waves and grab their boards and head in whenever they get a chance. I met some neighbors the other day who have a wonderful collection of art...all surf related as he is an avid surfer and has competed his whole life. Guess I had better get some good pictures of my son and his friends this summer and try my hand at painting some surfers! Hope you week is going well and I appreciate your checking in with me!

Little House On The Prairie. I was also struck by the fact that they made those wagons with hickory bows and stretched canvas! Wonder who was the first to start painting on canvas... I am slowly getting used to my new studio and finding where I put things. I have been enjoying having the windows open and love the ocean breeze. It has been like summer the last few days. There are still people on the beach every day. I love to see the dogs with their owners chasing sticks into the surf. I plan to work on some beach paintings tomorrow. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Your Pet In Oil

Today, when I returned home from teaching in Norfolk, Bailee was doing the happy dance
and was just beside herself with joy...you just can't beat that kind of reception! Our little kitty,
Rusty, passed away last month at the age of fifteen, and even though she didn't dance, she had
a way of pacing back and forth and shaking the tip of her tail that let me know that I was missed.
I miss her!
I love to paint...and I love to paint animals so if you have one you love and want me to capture
your precious pet in oil, I can do that by working from your pet's photograph. They don't have
to sit while I paint and even if your pet has passed away, as long as your have a good picture, I

These sweet little birds can be found at the beach or around town on golf courses and lawns. They are fun to watch and this little guy was a pleasure to paint. After more crazy anxiety when I got into my studio, I was able to get down to some painting. I got out my new paints which always helps to fuel the anticipation and set up my palette and work space and even christened a new round brush!

Had to try Gamblin's Radiant Turquoise Blue that can be seen in the water of my Kildeer painting!

I love looking at these little footprints in the sand that seem to be covering every square inch of the beach the last week or so. Guess they are happy to have reclaimed the beach after most of the vacationing visitors have gone for the season!

I entered my studio today with the hopes of diving in and painting all day. I avoided it all morning and by the time I got up there....I had my self so worked up about it that you would have thought I was about to do brain surgery! I have just really psyched myself out after being away so long and have been unsure of what direction to take and on and on. I looked around my room and my eyes rested on this painting that I had done some time ago. I have always loved the face but wasn't happy with the green background that seemed to strong a contrast to the softness of the gray fur and the light in the eyes bothered me. So I picked it up and set out some paints and got to work. I started with cerulean blue and softened it a bit with orange and white to make a soothing grayed blue for the background and worked it into the hair a bit and softened the edges. I worked on her eyes and felt very tickled that I had started painting again. I also worked on a cow that I had done awhile back and the whole experience helped me know what supplies I was missing and I decided to make a run to my favorite store, Jerry's Artarama. I may have to ease back into painting and allow the process lead me instead of me leading it for now!

My new life at the beach continues to unfold with the walks on the beach being the highlight of each day. Bailee and I went on a walk the other morning and saw the most beautiful sunrise! I got so excited when the sun came popping up and also couldn't believe how many other people had come down to watch it. What a great way to start the day!

Since moving to the beach, I found a great yoga studio that is at the oceanfront and have loved getting back into practicing yoga. When you walk into the yoga studio, they have a framed newsletter article about a master yoga teacher who is also a dancer and is 92 years young! She has been teaching yoga for 45 years. I found it very encouraging as I am really wanting to focus my energy on yoga now in my "middle" age. It is really possible to do anything....just gotta keep working through the fear and never give up!

Even as I child...I couldn't do this but...you NEVER know! It sure feels good to stretch and have goals! This is the view from the yoga class. On Saturday I saw a group of dolphins playing in the surf! What an ideal setting for such a calming practice. I think the dolphins were doing their own form of yoga!

This little bird was inspired by a visitor to my blog who was looking for a painting of a nuthatch so I decided to paint one! I saw a bit of blue in this one so I decided to exaggerate the colors I saw and orange too giving it an exciting complimentary scheme. What a miracle birds are going about their business with song and such lightness in their step and inspiring freedom when they take flight! I sure do enjoy painting them.

It is a beautiful day here in Virginia Beach. It is windy and sunny so when I got up to the beach, the ocean was very choppy this morning. Bailee wanted no part of it as the waves were making too much noise! My grandpuppy Jet is going to spend the day with me next week so it should be an experience with trying to coax Bailee closer to the ocean and keep Jet, the LAB, from pulling me into the waves! I may have to do separate trips... I love to watch the labs with their owners who can't get enough of the water and fetching balls and sticks.

It is always different!

Well, it has taken me awhile to get back to painting! I have been busy getting my new life at the beach all
set up...still painting walls and decorating, walking Bailee, and started yoga classes too! Last week I painted with Barbara and Scott London at his gallery on Colley Avenue called London Square Gallery. I worked on a painting of a bog in Ireland close to where Barbara lives for part of the year in Valnetia
but have not finished it. I really was kind of afraid to paint again since it has been so long and felt like after thismove, that I needed to paint something of the beach. My friends, Adele, and Claudia came for our Tuesday painting in my studio and Adele was painting a dog so I finally broke through and started on the same dog so I could get in the swing again. I do LOVE painting animals. Anyway, I had fun!!! And that is what it is all about! This time of year people love to have their pets painted and I have kept busy in previous years working on many a pet so if you have a furry friend that you would like me to paint or you love Boots and want to give him a home.... send me an email at normasart@cox.net!

All Moved In!

Wow!!! And I said I would probably only be posting once a week for awhile! It has been over a month! But I made it....all moved out of my 2400 square foot house in Chesapeake, to my cozy 1000 square foot beach
cottage! Well it really is a duplex but I think it feels like the beach cottage I have always dreamed of! While I have not been painting on canvas in weeks and weeks...there has been quite a bit of painting going on! Here is my new place before....

My first thought was that I had painted a lot of rooms. I could knock this out in a few hours! WRONG!! Several days later and THREE coats of paint applied with a BRUSH....I finished. Luckily my friend, Pat, helped and my son Sean came for a few hours too.

Starting to look a bit more cozy...Miss Bailee and I camped out a couple of days before my big moving day. I had brought several car loads of things and wanted to stay overnight so I could keep painting! And go for walks in the early morning on the beach. :-)

Moving Day....Bailee is in shock. I got her some treats called "Pet Ease". If they eased her stress at all...I SURE COULDN'T TELL!! After taking off out the front door at our old house and scaring all of us she shook and cried all the way to the beach and cried in the room where she was kept until all the moving was
completed. She is a bit high strung....to say the least. I really wish I had managed to get some pictures of the people who helped me move. Thanks so much to Lena, Ron, Johnny, Pat, Drew, John, Sean, Pat and Claudia and Adele who all helped me pull it all together and I am so very grateful! I am excited about this new adventure and inspirational setting!! I will be back in my studio soon to get the oil paint flowing on canvas again!
I have more pictures to share and thoughts about the move but for some reason my photo editor is not uploading properly. I will leave it here and add a collage from my recently sold paintings. I have that copied from a photo program that I can add in directly. Amazingly in spite of the fact that I have not painted in two months, I have wonderful collectors who have purchased a dozen painting in that time and I truly appreciate
your interest and that you have followed my work in my absence. Thank you!

Still here! I am feeling that this move is really going to happen as I am surrounded by boxes and a mountain of stuff that is going to be donated to the Salvation Army. I have discovered the joy of Craigslist and have decided to never pay full price again without checking craigslist first! It is so easy! Anyway, I am posting another of my favorites and really will be getting back to my easel soon! Yesterday my friend and fellow artist, Claudia Finn, and I took a trip to East Beach, which is only thirty minutes from my home and saw the Coastal Living East Beach house. It is SO beautiful! If you live in this area, check the hours that it is open and go see it! It is 10.00 but if you love coastal living style, you will love this home. The whole neighborhood is beautiful and the beach is gorgeous. I thought I would share some of the sights I saw yesterday.......enjoy!

That's me! Still working on my dream to be a beach bum/artist! For those of you who have followed my blog the last month or so, you know that it is actually happening! I am set to move next month and have been going through all the stuff that has accumulated for the last 25 years! I had done pretty well with my stuff but I still have remnants of things my boys had growing up and in high school that I have needed to get feedback and today, my youngest son, Andrew went back to Virginia Tech for his sophomore year and moved into his own apartment with roommates. We were up at the crack of dawn loading the car and trailer with most of the contents of his room!

I went for a bike ride the other evening in the new neighborhood and had so much fun checking out all the beach cottages and taking in all that wonderful sea air! I needed a break from all the boxes and dust for awhile to keep me at it! :-) I want to share a picture of the bench where I hope to have my morning coffee and also one of the fattest sea gulls I have ever seen! I really will be getting back to my easel soon but for the next month or so it may be only once or twice a week. Thanks for continuing to check in with me and I WILL BE BACK.

After Andrew left with his bed in tow, I was worried about our cat Rusty who always sleeps in his bed...where would she go?? I know sleeping with Bailee, the dog is out!

It seems I could also call this piece, Beach Distraction! These last couple of weeks since I made my decision to rent my house and move to the beach....I have been a wee bit distracted from my painting! I am so excited to share that I have found someone to rent my house in Chesapeake and will be renting a duplex in Virginia Beach that is 50 yards from the Atlantic Ocean!! I wanted to get closer to the beach but did not dream that this would be a possibility! I am going to have to really downsize which I started more than a year ago and have been doing full time in the last two weeks but I can't wait to start this new adventure and to share all the inspirations that this change will surely bring! While down seeing my new place, I took this picture....

The duplex I am going to rent is at the northend of the beach needs some paint and TLC to make it shine and I would love to share the progress when the move begins. On this end I have begun transforming my old furniture and adapting it to the new beach cottage look! Here is the first piece which is from my dining room when I was growing up and I finally broke down on Friday and painted it white. This is just the primer coat but I kind of like it just the way it is!

Some of my best memories growing up was our yearly trip to Wildwood, New Jersey and we would usually rent a little efficiency apartment and take enough food for the week. I never remember eating out when we where there! We spent the days at the ocean and at night my Dad and I would go to the boardwalk and go on the rides and eat cotton candy and just have fun together. My Mom was probably exhausted from cooking! Anyway, this quote struck a cord because it was such a simple experience. A couple of small suitcases and all the fun came from the ocean, the sea air, and time spent together. My Dad and I liked the pretty tame rides and the Pirate Ship! Since that time we always lived near the beach as a military family. Where I live now is a thirty minute drive and now that my nest is empty most of the year, I am going to move within walking distance of the ocean and be able to walk on the beach and enjoy some of that sea air. That is why I have not been posting as often and this piece is one of my favorites that has been posted before. I have been purging, putting my house on the rental market, and whipping my house into shape! So bear with me for a bit while I get my bearings and have an idea of my time frame. I'm still here! Hope you are too and have not thought I fell off the blogosphere! I think that is a word. Since my epiphany that I could no longer wait to move to the beach and start the rest of my life....I have been in a bit of a self inflicted tailspin. It has been both scary and thrilling to begin the ball rolling and start searching for a new place. I have also been putting things on craigslist and donating to the Salvation Army and still throwing stuff out! I am so glad that I started this purging process last year. It is a long one after 26 years of raising children. My oldest son, Patrick had his 26th birthday yesterday! Yikes...how did that happen! I hope your weekend is a great one filled with summer fun and some rest! We just had a really awesome thunderstorm so I hope things will be a wee bit cooler! This little chickadee first appeared in my blog a week or so ago as a soft pastel painting. I decided to do it again in oil to show the difference. So, if you scroll down a ways, you will see the other. Soft pastels must be framed under glass and oil paintings do not unless they are on paper. I may do this little chickadee in acrylic just for fun and as sort of an experiment. I had an awesome weekend. I have had a dream of moving closer to the oceanfront so I indulged my dream and actually went to look at some places to live and walked around different areas. Not sure how long it will take to get things together but I am feeling closer to making it happen! I spent the day purging more stuff and finding things to sell on Craigslist. These little Ghost Crabs are not always visible. Hence, the name, I guess. I told my friend, Barbara, that I wanted to paint a little crab that I'd seen at the beach and she recounted a story of a trip to the beach with her daughter where she threw out a Dorito and out came the little crab to pick up the chip and ran off! They decided to try this again and learned each time they were quick to retrieve them. She said she had a picture of one of the crabs and was very sweet to bring it to one of our painting sessions for me to paint. It was fun to do and a a first for this type of crab.

Once again, I had a great response of names for yesterday's unnamed post. The name that was chosen using Random.org is Precious Pearl! Thank you to Sharon Hanson for the wonderful suggestion! Some of the other names were Resi, Alma, Susi, Berta, and Elsa sent in from Angelika, Moo...talking to me? from Sean, Snowflake from Barb, Daisy Moo from Rita, Sweetpea from Luanne, Ellie from an unnamed source :-), and last but not lease, Lily, from Barbara. All lovely names and I hope I can "borrow" one of these names for future paintings. I just worked on a British cow today after hearing from a reader that she would like to see me painting one and that will show up in the next week! I really loved working on this "The Whole Cat And Caboodle Challenge" that was offered by Dreama Tolle Perry on the Daily Paintworks Challenge. I started it by doing a wash of red paint and let it dry and then lightly sketched in the kitty with a paint brush. Then I put it on my easel and got busy with other things. It has been weeks now and she called to me today. I really enjoyed this challenge which has just enough of my favorite color red in it and the focus on the eyes that I love to paint and capture so much! Hope you Tuesday was a good one. I fertilized my garden outside and that was enough of being outdoors for me! Hope the weather breaks soon so I can get out and clean up my planting beds a bit and pick up all the limbs that have come down in recent storms. Have a wonderful Wednesday! Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci spent 12 years working on the

Mona Lisa's lips? Or that Paul Gaugin worked as a laborer on the panama canal's construction? Over 25,000 workers lost their lives working on the

canal. This weekend I stopped to get a sandwich and the local paper had

a trivia section which was fun to read so I decided to look up some art

trivia! Wonder if Leonardo was struggling with to smile or not to smile..

maybe she had bad teeth.

This painting is one I did awhile back and I don't often repost but I

learned from my gallery in Richmond that they have had a couple of sales

of my paintings and since I took the weekend off spending time with my

boys, my grand puppies, chillin, and shopping and all kinds of fun stuff...

thought I would just say hi and show you this bovine gal that has found

a new home up in Richmond! I hope you were able to stay cool and have

some fun this weekend. I bought a new pedometer and made my goal of

10,000 steps a day. I learned that I could do a bunch of loops around my

house and up and down the stairs to fit a few thousand steps in at the

end of the day! My dog Bailee looked a bit perplexed as I was on "my

walk!" Have a wonderful Monday and keep smiling! :-)

My thoughts are all about the beach tonight after finishing up this piece in my studio today and my sons have gone together to camp out at the beach in North Carolina. How fun! When I first began painting in earnest, I painted in acrylic and soft pastel

and quickly pastel became my medium of choice. I love the immediacy of the medium the way light refracts off the colors. Pastels are pure pigment with a gum binder. I had not picked up a pastel in almost two years and decided today to break them out and give them a go. It was great fun. It came back to me pretty much like riding a bike. I switched to mostly painting in oils about five years ago and still did the occasional pet portrait in pastels. I may just do some more now that I got my hands full of pastels again today! I did break one and got it all over the floor....forgot about that! Let me know what you think and if you can see a difference from oils!

Earlier in the week I shared a photograph of hydrangeas cut from my own new little garden and I said I felt a painting coming. Well, on Friday when I paint with my friends at Scott London's gallery in Norfolk I began painting them! After taking a couple of days off to spend with family and friends, I returned to my studio and had a wonderful time finishing it up. They are my very favorite flower and a are a joy to paint!!

I am so excited that I finally go down to the beach over the weekend. A friend of mine had a birthday and we went to Mahi Mah's restaurant on the beach and had a delicious dinner followed by drinks outside listening to a concert. Perfect evening! I also had a great evening yesterday with my oldest son and his girlfriend who came for dinner. I hope you had a great weekend too! It surely was a hot one around here but earlier this evening we had a big thunder storm. I am not sure if it helped to cool things off yet. It's almost the weekend again! The times seems to be flying by and here we have a holiday weekend. Hope to get to the beach with a friend and relax a bit. This painting is done on a multi-media board that I have used before. It is pretty cool as it has a resin in it that makes it possible to frame is without glass. Panels and canvas always work without glass but oils on paper require glass over it to protect the painting over time. Anyway, bluebirds are a lovely subject and are a pleasure to paint! Wish I could see more in my yard but can't say that I have ever seen one. Just finished up my newsletter today...really finished just in the nick of time for the month's end. Guess I haven't gotten painting pigs out of my system. I decided that Miss Piggy needed a wee little piggy. I think he looks a bit like his Mum! Well...didn't get as much accomplished today like my NEWSLETTER! I will get it out tomorrow as it is the end of the month! I am not sure if it was the barometric pressure or allergies but my head has really been hurting the past two days. My newsletter may be brief! I did have a wonderful visit yesterday with my buddies, Adele, and Claudia. We didn't get any painting done but had lunch and lots of fun and inspiration for each other. I must share a picture of the quiche I made. I don't often cook so I have to take pictures and share on the web! You never know when it will happen again!

I was sure that Andrew would help me eat the leftovers but I guess real men DON'T eat quiche so I ended up eating all the rest! He doesn't know what he is missing! Here we are with another holiday weekend approaching. I'd love to hear from you about what kinds of things you do on the 4th or perhaps a 4th of July that stands out for you when you were a child! I will always remember a fishing trip with my Dad, a neighbor, my sister and her boyfriend when I was nine. We went to Cape May, New Jersey out in a little boat and fished all day. I caught a ten pound flounder! I was quite the city girl from Philly who rarely left our little neighborhood so this was quite the adventure! I can still feel how great it was with the warmth of my sun burn that night sleeping on a cot in my parent's room by their GIANT air conditioner that was like a piece of furniture. It was the only room in the house with it back then! Such good memories and falling asleep to the fireworks! That's my memory....night night.

As you can see...I had fun using lots of paint and texture. I did this with a combination of brush and palette knife. I had asked a question on my facebook page about what I should paint more of and the answer was beach stuff! I have been fortunate in my life to live all of my adult life close to the ocean in beautiful settings like Pensacola, Florida, San Diego, California, Newport, Rhode Island, Jacksonville, Florida, and now here near Virginia Beach. I have also been on the other side of the ocean in Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and Hawaii. I liked ALL of them! I just like the beach. Perhaps because I am a water sign...a Pisces or just because the seaside is such a peaceful, serene, and awesome place! The sound of the waves cresting, the sea gulls overhead, the smell of the salty air. Yes....so why have I not taken a day to just go sit, walk and spend the day on the beach yet this year???? These little nuthatches are just such cute birds and so much fun to watch as they run up and down trees. It was great fun to paint three birds in one painting. They each have their own little personality and attitude.

This painting was inspired by a photograph sent to me by Shawn who is a collector and fellow cow lover and I did a small study of it back then and named it The Cows Of Garret County. I decided that I needed to do a large close up of them. They look so into the moment. According to Wilkepedia "in Greek mythology as The Three Graces, goddesses of such things as charm, beauty, and creativity".

There you have it. They have it all and they look like they know it! I had fun using both brush and palette knife on this. I started it during my morning painting session with my friends, Barbara and Scott and then some more at Harbor's Edge. It was such a fun day of painting. Happy First Day Of Summer! I realized that today as I was out on my bike ride admiring all the gardens

in my neighborhood and feeling grateful to live where I do and to be out enjoying such a beautiful day! The air smelled like summer when I was a child when the school year ended and I felt that great taste of freedom from books and teachers and the lazy days stretched out ahead of me!! It isn't quite like that now but I do get to come home and water my own garden and head to my studio to do what I love to do. I have had a wonderful week of finding homes for my paintings. Over a dozen pieces will be making their way to different parts of the country. Yeah! Thank you all! What does the first day of summer mean to you? Icy Pops? Swimming Pools? Barbecues? Hope you all had a good weekend. I did quite a bit of work but also relaxed and watched some good movies. It was good to get back in my studio today after a great bike ride and planting some more flowers in the garden. Right after I got them in the ground we had a nice light rain. This is my first magpie painting. It started out to be a crow but I decided to make it a magpie. I just read a bunch about them. I guess they can be found in the western U.S. and also in England, Ireland, and Scotland. There is some question now if the ones found in the U.S. might not be a different species. Here is a video of a bird who was rescued and released and returns to his rescuers home daily and sings a song! Wonder if it is a song of gratitude. I had put a bird feeder in a crepe Myrtle tree that is under my studio window thinking that it would be fun to look out and watch and the squirrels knocked it over and eventually found the sunflower seeds on my screen porch....came in and was eating them and then when we removed him, he returned and gnawed his we through my screen because he still smelled them. Hope you are having a fun and relaxing weekend! I have been out enjoying the sunshine but also took some time to watch a couple of old movies on Turner Classic movie channel. Wow...such a fun day yesterday with fourteen name suggestions for yesterday's painting and it sold in the first hour. Life is good! The name chosen was Saddle Up Vaquero and it happens to have come from my son, Sean who participated on facebook and lives and works up in Northern Virginia! Thanks Sean. There were a bunch of fun names that I would like to share. I don't have every one's name as some people just send a suggestion along in an email so I will just list the names. I really loved working on this little guy who seems to be part of a world where the pace of life is a bit slower. Perhaps his owner has stopped to get some lunch or a drink at the local watering hole. Hope they remember to bring him something to drink too!
